When Major Anderson finally surrendered Fort Sumter on April 14, 1861, he did so with his honor intact. Confederate General Beauregard, his former student at West Point, allowed him a 100-gun salute to the American flag before lowering it. Even in the beginning of a brutal war, both sides recognized that some things transcend conflict: duty, honor, the respect owed to a worthy opponent.
Anderson carried that flag north with him, later raising it again over Sumter exactly four years later when the war ended. His principles outlasted the conflict.
