Let's Roll

They were strangers who boarded a plane in Newark on a Tuesday morning. Business travelers. Students. Retirees. People with connecting flights and hotel reservations and ordinary plans.

Then the phones started ringing. From thirty thousand feet, the passengers of United Flight 93 learned what had already hit New York and Washington. They understood, in the space of a few whispered calls, that their plane was a weapon — and that no one was coming to save them.

They stormed the cockpit knowing exactly what it would cost them. The plane crashed into an empty Pennsylvania field instead of the United States Capitol.
