Washington's Farewell: Warning Against Division

George Washington writing his Farewell Address at desk, choosing principle over power
When George Washington stepped down as president after two terms, he could have held power for life. Instead, he issued a Farewell Address warning against political factions and regional divisions. "The name of American," he wrote, "must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations."

Washington chose principle over power. He voluntarily gave up authority to preserve the republic's values. Unity mattered more than winning.
