Under One Banner: The Flag That United Thirteen

Before June 14, 1777, each regiment flew its own colors into battle. Massachusetts had one flag, Virginia another, Pennsylvania yet another. Each colony had its own identity, its own traditions, its own proud history. But the new nation desperately needed one banner to unite thirteen very different colonies—merchants and farmers, Puritans and Anglicans, northerners and southerners, city dwellers and frontier settlers.

The Stars and Stripes gave them a shared symbol that transcended their differences. On the battlefield, soldiers from Rhode Island could rally to the same flag as soldiers from Georgia. The flag proclaimed a powerful message: whatever our differences, whatever our disagreements, we're in this great experiment together.

That unifying power hasn't diminished with time. The flag still represents E Pluribus Unum—out of many, one.
