Crispus Attucks was a man of African and Native American heritage who escaped slavery to become a sailor and rope maker. On March 5, 1770, he stood at the front of a crowd of colonists confronting British soldiers. He became the first to fall in what would become the American Revolution.
Attucks didn't fight for his community alone—he stood with dockworkers, apprentices, and merchants. Rich and poor, Black and white, they gathered together that night because they shared a common cause: liberty. The community that mourned him together became the community that fought together.
